: October marks the beginning of a high-risk season for respiratory illnesses in North India. The combination of falling temperatures, rising air pollution and active viruses lead to a sharp increase in flu and pneumonia cases, often resulting in higher hospital and ICU admissions during this season.

Vaccination are the most effective way to prevent such health-related complications. Pneumococcal vaccines- PCV13, PCV20, and PPSV23, provide protection against Streptococcus pneumoniae, a major cause of bacterial pneumonia. These are recommended for adults above 60 years and those with chronic illnesses like asthma, COPD, diabetes, heart disease, or weakened immunity.

Alongside this, the influenza vaccine plays a crucial role in reducing flu-related pneumonia and reducing hospitalization during this season. Both trivalent (H1N1, H3N2, and one B strain) and quadrivalent (two A strains and two B lineages) vaccines are available in India, should be taken annually, particularly for older adults, patients with chronic lung or heart conditions, pregnant women, and healthcare workers.

Dr. Kashish Dutta, Consultant Pulmonologist, Fortis Hospital, emphasizes “Every October, we see a surge in pneumonia & flu cases across North India. Pneumococcal and influenza vaccines are safe, effective, and can significantly reduce the risk of ICU admissions during such times. Prevention through vaccination is far more powerful than cure. Along with immunization, maintaining good respiratory hygiene, like wearing masks in crowded places, covering coughs and sneezes, and frequent handwashing, along with eating nutritious food, staying hydrated, and avoiding pollution and smoke can go a long way in protecting oneself from seasonal infections.”

Other important vaccines for adults such as the COVID-19 booster, Tdap (for pertussis), Hib (for high-risk groups), MMR (for those without immunity), and the Zoster vaccine also play a role in reducing serious respiratory infections and complications.

As we step into this vulnerable season, the message is clear: vaccination is not just protection, it is prevention. Timely medical consultation, preventive vaccination, and healthy lifestyle practices together form the best defence against seasonal flu and pneumonia, ensuring a safer and healthier winter for all.
